Magyar Defeats Orbán to Lead Hungary

April 12, 2026

By Sue Kientz

Hungary was the scene of a hard-fought election on Sunday, 12 April 2026, where voters decided who will be the next prime minister, current PM Viktor Orbán or opposition candidate Péter Magyar. When the polls at last closed on the closely followed contest, Prime Minister Orbán conceded that Mr. Magyar had prevailed and congratulated him on his decisive victory. (1) With almost all votes counted, Magyar’s Tisza party appears to have won two-thirds of the parliamentary seats, which not only guarantees that Péter Magyar will serve as prime minister, but also will enable him to make substantive changes to Hungarian law. (2) Voter turnout broke records at about 80%, something not seen in Hungary since it shook off Communist rule. (1)

With such a mandate, Mr. Magyar will be able to roll back the many changes Orbán made in his long tenure that sent Hungary to the far-right of the political spectrum. Orbán’s policies and decisions had distanced Hungary from its fellow EU countries, especially with regards to support for the war in Ukraine, among many other illiberal shifts. (3) Orbán’s loss is therefore an unwelcomed result for Russian President Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump who even took the unusual step of sending his vice president, J.D. Vance, to Hungary just a few days prior to the election to campaign for Orbán. (4)

With so much desire to prevail in Hungary from both the left and right, what markers did astrology provide that pointed to this leadership change?  On Election day, (5) the Sun (22 Aries) and dwarf planet Eris (25 Aries) were conjunct (0-5 degrees; united, forceful) representing that this was a day (Sun) for the marginalized (e.g., those opposed to Orbán’s strong-man government as well as those who felt disenfranchised by his drastic moves, since Eris represents people that feel left out, alienated, and dismissed) (6) to band together and work hard to overcome their current situation. That concentrated effort is symbolized by Sun and Eris being square (90 degrees; effort and/or energy needed) Jupiter (16 Cancer). Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, not only brings good fortune, but also represents liberal values like generosity, expansiveness, and laughter, versus Saturn’s conservative and somewhat restrictive traits of careful spending, dependence on tradition, and business interests being of more value than leisure or levity. So the mood of this day was more in line with the more liberal, younger candidate, not the older authoritarian one. Additionally, the Moon (21 Aquarius) was sextile (60 degrees; supportive, uplifting) the Sun, another clue that the populace wanted progressive changes (Aquarius looks to the future, while the Moon represents the People as well as Change).

One does not only gauge the general mood. The candidates themselves are revealed to have the “right stuff” that matches the final result. Looking at Viktor Orbán’s horoscope, (7) the Election Day Sun/Eris is semisquare (45 degrees; an irritation) Orbán’s Sun (9 Gemini), at the same time Saturn (7 Aries) is semisquare his Mercury (21 Taurus). His life (Sun) and thoughts (Mercury as thinking, ruminating) have been anxiously focused on how unpopular he has become (in some ways, he is the “Eris” now, the unwanted) and how his strict policies (Saturn) are now scorned.

On the other hand, Péter Magyar’s birth chart (8) shows a large presence in hopeful Pisces, with Sun and dwarf planet Rumina (exactly conjunct at 25 Pisces) beside Venus (19 Pisces) and Mars (29 Pisces), and all square Neptune (24 Sagittarius). If Magyar indeed puts his plans to work and energizes visionary Neptune in expansive Sagittarius, he will bring more than hopes and dreams to his constituents. Sun with Rumina, the latter named for a protectress of nursing mothers and infants, (9, 10) indicates a person who wants to care for their charges, to make sure they not only have necessities but are nurtured in a multitude of ways. Adding Venus (money and relationships) and Mars (energy, vitality) brings positive additions to his core concerns. And as he moves to his new position, Jupiter will be moving forward and making a fortunate trine (120 degrees; helpful, auspicious) to his Venus, then Sun/Rumina, then Mars, as he initiates his vision for Hungary.
