New York City Elects Zohran Mamdani
By Sue Kientz
Although 2025 is not a presidential election year, Election Day 2025 became surprisingly noteworthy when voters in New York City, perhaps the most American city in the U.S., decided that 34-year-old N.Y. State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Africa, of Ugandan and Indian descent, a Muslim, and a Democrat-Socialist, was the best choice to be their mayor for the next four years.
The announcement of his victory(1) came just before the Full Moon in Taurus (Sun 12 Scorpio/Moon 6 Taurus), so some natural emotions could be amplified, but in addition, fortunate Jupiter (25 Cancer) was on the ascendant in New York City, and Jupiter was exactly square Mamdani’s Sun (24 Libra).(2) No wonder he gave such a thrilling, crowd-pleasing speech to his supporters, present and virtual.
People all over want to know more about who Mamdani is, who bested former Governor Andrew Cuomo both in the Democratic primary and then in the mayoral race, as Cuomo then ran as an Independent. Mamdani’s rise in the polls was so definitive, current mayor Eric Adams bowed out of the mayoral contest a week before the vote. Mamdani is not an unknown, as he’s been serving in the N.Y. State assembly for three consecutive terms, and his life story is available online. But facts are one thing; what people want to know is, what kind of person is he, deep down, under the surface?
Astrology has such a far-reaching perspective that no online biography offers. Using birthdata posted and confirmed by his campaign on Instagram, we see that Mamdani’s Sun (24 Libra) is conjunct (between 0-7 degrees; empowering) Mars (0 Scorpio), contributing to his pleasant and engaging personality (Libra Sun) that is also energizing and charismatic (Mars in Scorpio). Both Sun and Mars (and Mercury at 4 Scorpio) are square (90 degrees; challenging) Saturn (0 Aquarius), indicative of a serious, ambitious side (Saturn) that has led him into public service in the first place, and now to the high honor of soon being sworn in as New York’s mayor at such a young age, the youngest since 1892.(3) Saturn in Aquarius also shows he is forward looking and interested in trying new things (Aquarius), a nod to his many progressive campaign promises that won over voters.
Mayor-elect Mamdani is the first African-born and of Indian descent to serve as New York’s mayor, and the first Muslim. All these firsts are represented by a stellium of additional Aquarian planets that trine (120 degrees; supportive, fortunate) his Libra Sun, namely his Moon (17 Aquarius) representing his past and lineage, dwarf planet Gonggong (24 Aquarius), signaling a compassionate and sensitive nature, and dwarf planet Salacia (26 Aquarius) indicative of one who follows through and can execute plans.
Mamdani’s Sun is also semisquare Venus (8 Virgo), Makemake, and Jupiter (both 7 Virgo), which he expresses in his love of music. Years ago he had a side gig as a rapper and released music videos under the name Mr. Cardamom, with one song a tribute to his grandmother.(4) With Makemake (unusual, surprising) conjunct Jupiter (multi-national) and Venus (music), it should be no surprise that Mamdani can rap in six different languages.
Perhaps of greatest import for New Yorkers about their new mayor is the mayor-elect’s Sun opposite (180 degrees; partnering, illuminating) dwarf planets Eris and Rumina (both 17 Aries). Eris is as big as Pluto and a foil to Pluto’s dark nature of self interest and lust for power, by focusing on community and connection rather than selfish designs. Rumina was officially named this summer after a divine protectress of nursing mothers and infants. The combination of Eris/Rumina is therefore focused on others (Eris), especially the most vulnerable and in need (Rumina). Rumina was well named, as the USA mundane chart shows Rumina conjunct the Ascendant(5), representing how America became not just a refuge for many millions in its near 250-year history, but has in the last 100 years consistently fed and sent aid to the world’s poorest, even if presently that role has been severely curtailed. As if to emphasize that this trait of Mamdani’s is deeply felt, his Moon (17 Aquarius) is closely sextile (60 degrees; helping, effective) his Eris/Rumina, and his Moon also squares his Pluto (17 Scorpio). In other words, his personal feelings (Moon) more align with concerns about others and those in need (Eris/Rumina), not with those wielding power for their own purposes (Pluto).
Astrology shows this is Mamdani’s moment. When he is sworn in as New York City’s next mayor,(6) transiting Eris (Others of all kinds, just like the many different people that occupy America’s greatest city, New York) will be at 24 Aries, exactly opposite Mamdani’s Sun, which can be a rivalry, but also a partnership. Transiting Rumina (27 Gemini) is trine Mamdani’s Sun/Mars, indicating that his promised intent to make life easier for the majority of New Yorkers will be one that he will work hard at and succeed in some measure in the coming months and years.
