Unrest in Indonesia: Political Perks and Rising Public Anger

September 5, 2025

By Rod Chang

Ongoing protests across Indonesia, initially sparked by a proposed housing allowance for parliament members, have escalated into nationwide unrest. Public anger is fueled by frustration over lavish perks given to politicians amid rising living costs and austerity measures. Demonstrations began on August 25 and turned more violent after a police vehicle killed a delivery driver. At least ten people have died, with hundreds injured. In response, President Prabowo Subianto has called for firm action against what he describes as “anarchic” acts, though he has revoked the controversial allowance.

From an astrological perspective, Indonesia’s chart reveals a turbulent alignment. The Sun (leadership, at 5 Capricorn, representing conservative values) opposes Uranus (reform, rebellion, at 2 Cancer), with both squaring (90 degrees) the Moon (the people, women, agriculture, at 6 Aries) and Mars (anger, passion, action, at 0 Libra) in the 4th House. This forms a Cardinal Grand Cross (1), a configuration known for generating intense, unstable energy—mirroring Indonesia’s volatile social and environmental conditions.

Recent planetary transits have intensified this dynamic. Currently Pluto (crisis, scandal, transformation, at 1 Aquarius) in Aquarius (communities, the masses) is conjunct natal Jupiter (hope, expansion, at 5 Aquarius), which rules Indonesia’s Midheaven, symbolizing the ruling class. This pairing reflects the people’s desire to purge corruption and confront the crises caused by their leaders.

The Cancer Ingress of 2025 brings the Sun (leadership, at 0° Cancer) and Jupiter (hope, prosperity, at 2° Cancer) into close conjunction with Indonesia’s Uranus. This alignment activates the Grand Cross, heightening expectations for reform. Meanwhile, Neptune (vision, dream, illusion, at 1 Aries) and Saturn (reality, bureaucracy, at 29 Pisces), representing dreams (Neptune) and disillusionment (Saturn), conjoin Indonesia’s Moon and oppose Mars—signifying the public (Moon) awakening from false hopes (Neptune), driven by anger (Mars) into direct action (also Mars).

The Lunar Nodes, which represent collective focus, further underscore this theme. The transiting South Node (18 Virgo) sits near Indonesia’s Saturn (19 Virgo), emphasizing bureaucracy, rigid systems, and scandals among rulers. The upcoming Lunar Eclipse (on September 7th, at 15 Pisces) will also oppose Indonesia’s Saturn in the Fourth House, magnifying awareness of corruption and fueling public agitation. Soon after, the Solar Eclipse on September 21 (at 29 Virgo) will conjunct Indonesia’s Mars and oppose transiting Saturn and Neptune—signaling the potential for even greater unrest if the government fails to meet public demands.

Indonesia now stands at a crossroads. While concessions such as withdrawing the housing allowance may ease tensions, deeper reforms are urgently expected. If leaders resist, the astrological indicators suggest that unrest could intensify, pushing the nation into further confrontation between rulers and the people.

Notes: (1) a Grand Cross describes a pattern where four planets or clusters of planets lie roughly 90 degrees equidistant from each other in a “cross,” indicative of a life of great stress, challenge, or terrible life choices.
