Canada Goes to the Polls

April 1, 2025

By Laurien Rueger

Only nine days after being sworn in, Canada’s new prime minister Mark Carney called a federal election for April 28, 2025. (1) Political pundits are calling this one of the most consequential elections in Canadian history. The unofficial ballot box question is, “Which party leader will be the best prime minister to defend the country against US President Donald Trump’s economic warfare and threats of territorial annexation?” The astrology chart for the election reflects how competitive the race will be, with one pollster describing the election as “like a knife fight in a telephone booth”. (2) Mars will be closely opposite Pluto in the skies two days before the election with Mars symbolizing anger and aggression and dwarf planet Pluto symbolizing fanaticism and the drive for power.  Mars falls on the same degree as Canada’s Mercury which rules elections, confirming where these intense energies will play out. Interestingly, this is the third of three Mars-Pluto oppositions in Mars’s current cycle, and the first one occurred two days before the US presidential election on November 5, 2024, suggesting a common link or dynamic between the elections.

In fact, President Trump’s threats have turned Canadian politics upside down. The Conservative Party of Canada under Pierre Poilievre was leading by 20 or more percentage points in the polls for almost two years. But suddenly the Liberal Party of Canada under Mark Carney’s leadership is surging ahead of the Conservatives and may even win a majority of seats in Canada’s House of Commons. (3) Factors that have eaten into Conservative support include the departure of former Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who after more than nine years in power had become deeply unpopular; and Mark Carney himself, who has been quickly embraced by voters who see him as having the economic experience to lead the country through this critical period. Shocking political upsets are often the work of the planet Uranus which likes to turn everything topsy-turvy. And indeed, Canada’s natal Sun (leadership and identity) is in the same degree as its natal Uranus, so the nation is prone to sudden, shocking changes relating to its leadership. This aspect was triggered by the March 29th solar eclipse, which occurred just six days after the election was called.

But Mark Carney is also heavily under the influence of Uranus at present. He was born on March 16, 1965, at 7:56 am in Fort Smith, Canada. (3) The Sign of Taurus was rising on the horizon (the Ascendant) when Carney was born with that Sign ruling banks and bankers. The Sign of Capricorn was overhead (the Midheaven) which signifies government and big business. Perfect for a former Governor of both the Bank of England and Bank of Canada who has also done well in the private sector! Carney also has Jupiter, the planet of wealth and good fortune, close to his Ascendant, among other indicators of success. Uranus is currently transiting (i.e., moving in the sky) near his Jupiter and Ascendant, suggesting an influx of excitement, celebrity status, and unpredictability. The Uranus transit coincided with Carney becoming prime minister and it will still be in effect on election night. Uranus is also closely transiting Carney’s secondary progressed Sun on election night, which suggests a major life change. (Secondary progressions are a popular predictive method which equates each day after birth with a year in one’s life.)

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre

Carney’s main rival is Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, born on June 3, 1979, in Calgary, Canada, time unknown. (4) Poilievre is often compared to Trump because of his penchant for catchy slogans, mean-spirited attacks on political rivals, and ‘anti-woke’ ideology. This has also negatively impacted Poilievre’s approval ratings as most Canadians do not want their government to emulate the increasingly authoritarian Trump regime. Both Trump and Poilievre have their Suns in Gemini, the Sign of ideas and communication, and both have relied on social media to connect with their base while holding mainstream media at arm’s length. Both men also have ‘hard’ or difficult aspects between their Mercuries, the planet of communication that rules Gemini, and Neptune, the planet of illusion, delusion, and deception. Poilievre’s proud and dramatic Jupiter in Leo is under attack by the Mars-Pluto opposition on the night of the election, suggesting that he could be overpowered by a stronger opponent. Transiting Jupiter recently passed over Poilievre’s Sun and it will pass over his Mercury during the course of the campaign. These are typically beneficial transits so there is still the possibility that Poilievre can turn his fortunes around.  But given his recent stunning loss of support, it may also be the case that a malefic, i.e., a traditionally negative planet, is affecting one of his chart Angles, which could portend political defeat. Without a birth time, we cannot determine those Angles and know for certain.
