Mark Carney: Canada’s New Prime Minister

March 18, 2025

by Laurien Rueger

Mark Carney, former governor for both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, was sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister on March 14th, 2025, in a no-nonsense ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.(1) Carney will have his hands full dealing not just with a growing trade war with the US, but a federal election that he must call soon if he is to avoid his new government’s defeat in Parliament. If Carney, who is new to politics, can convince Canadians that he is the best person to stand up to US President Trump, he could serve as prime minister for another four years. If he fails, then he will be remembered for having the shortest term of office of any prime minister in Canada’s history, and his main rival, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, will become Canada’s next prime minister.

Carney was sworn in at a potent astrological moment just hours after a total Lunar Eclipse at 23° Virgo. Born 16 March 1965, the eclipse opposed his natal Sun at 25° to 26° Pisces (depending on his exact time of birth, which is not available). Important events tend to cluster around eclipses but the fact that the Lunar Eclipse is opposite Carney’s Sun suggests that his path will not be an easy one. The Lunar Eclipse was also opposite two current planetary positions:  Saturn, which rules heavy responsibilities, limitations, and sometimes failure (and which is approaching Carney’s Sun); and Neptune, the planet of confusion and deception, which could reflect current global uncertainty, but also the impact of misinformation and disinformation on his longevity as prime minister.

When Carney was sworn in, transiting Mercury appeared to be standing still in the sky as it prepared to turn retrograde (apparent backward movement when seen from Earth) the following day. This suggests that many of Carney’s current plans (Mercury-ruled) may have to be reviewed, reworked, or scrapped altogether in the coming weeks as circumstances change rapidly. Mercury is also conjunct, that is, in the same degree area as Venus, which also turned retrograde recently. Venus rules charm and diplomacy, and the day before it stationed retrograde, the diplomatic debacle in the White House between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Trump-Vance Tag Team occurred. Venus retrograde may hint that Carney, who is viewed as a very serious person indeed, will have trouble connecting emotionally with the Canadian public. However, his popularity may turn around when Venus stations and resumes direct (apparent forward) motion conjunct Carney’s Sun on April 12th. The month of March is complex astrologically with Mercury and Venus both turning retrograde at or within one degree of the upcoming Solar Eclipse on March 29th, tying events at these times together in an interconnected web. It will all have an impact on Carney’s term of office as prime minister, no matter how long it lasts.
