New York Mayoral Primary Upset

June 26, 2025

By Alex Miller and Sue Kientz

On Tuesday 24 June 2025, New York City politics was turned on its head by the stunning victory of 33-year-old State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic Mayoral Primary Election.  Mamdani, who initiated his race in October 2024 with 1% support in the polls, swept former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo from the field, with a resounding 43%-36% victory over the presumed frontrunner.  Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, ran a very successful grassroots campaign, enticing New Yorkers with a platform focused on taming cost of living and improved security.  He will face off against scandal-ridden incumbent Mayor Eric Adams in November, running as an Independent, having left the Democratic Party in April.

A prime factor in the win is arguably the exact transit conjunction of the Sun with Jupiter (3 Cancer), which promotes positive outcomes generally and rules politics.  In Mamdani’s case, born 18 October 1991, this conjunction was trine (120 degrees) Mamdani’s natal Mars (1 Scorpio) and Mercury (3 Scorpio), representing how auspiciously his youthful energy (Mars) and deliberate rhetoric (Mercury) resonated with a majority of the electorate. In addition, Mars (4 Virgo) was also sextile (60 degrees) Mamdani’s Mars/Mercury, adding even more lift (Mars: energy, force) and laser focus (Virgo: attention to details) to his campaigning. When a natal planet or cluster of planets aligns in this way, this Minor Grand Trine — a trine bisected by planet(s) sextile each end of the trine — supplies a highly advantageous boost that manifests surprising and exciting events like Mamdani’s dark-horse primary win.

As if that magnificent supportive structure wasn’t validation enough, the Sun-Jupiter combo fell atop his natal asteroid Yes (4 Cancer), an affirmative energy, and opposed (180 degrees) natal asteroid Manhattan (7 Capricorn, for New York City) with Uranus (10 Capricorn, ruling shocks, upsets and surprises).  A T-Square pattern (a dynamic configuration composed of two or more points in opposition, each squared (90 degrees) a third) is formed with natal asteroid TRIUMF (at 1 Libra, named for a Canadian science research facility acronym, but operating reliably as its phonetic match “triumph,” meaning unqualified success).  A Grand Cross pattern (four or more points roughly equidistant at 90-degree intervals) is completed by transit Saturn (1 Aries), representing chief executives such as mayors, and Neptune (2 Aries), which can inspire others to support a cause or join a movement.

As well, transit Mercury (26 Cancer, ruling the vote itself) conjoined asteroid TRIUMF (21 Cancer), both squared Mamdani’s natal Sun (24 Libra), also suggesting a major victory (TRIUMF) for Mamdani (Sun) in the election (Mercury).  Another T-Square is formed with transit asteroid Victoria (27 Aries), named for the Roman goddess of victory, for an unmistakable “winning” vibe.

Transit asteroids Manhattan (19 Virgo) and Demokritos (25 Virgo, for Democratic) also conjoin natal asteroid Victoria (23 Virgo), further imaging a win (Victoria) in the New York City (Manhattan) Democratic Primary (Demokritos).  Finally, transit asteroid Yes (4 Taurus) opposed natal Mars/Mercury, in a T-Square with transit Pluto (3 Aquarius) suggests an affirmative outcome (Yes) in a volatile (Mars) election (Mercury), which potentially increases Mamdani’s personal power (Pluto).

Things also look positive for Zohran Mamdani at the November 4th general election, which features expansive, “lucky” Jupiter (25 Cancer) squared his birth Sun (24 Libra), itself conjoined by an exact Venus (26 Libra, symbolizing popularity) and asteroid Nike (named for the Greek goddess of victory) pairing.  Asteroid Yes (10 Taurus) will reprise its Primary placement, opposing natal Mars/Mercury, still in a T-Square with transformative Pluto (1 Aquarius).

If elected, Mamdani will become New York’s first Muslim mayor, and the first naturalized citizen to attain that office (born in Uganda, Mamdani moved to the US as a child and became an American citizen in 2018).

Her experience researching the latter led to her book More Plutos, which received a 2016 eLit Award. More Plutos also addresses how resonance, fractals, and intuition can explain how astrology works.
