50 years of Charlie’s Angels
by Ana Andrade
On April 6, actresses Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith, and Cheryl Ladd reunited at Party Fest to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the five-season television series Charlie’s Angels, originally released on September 22, 1976.
Farrah Fawcett was initially cast as the third Angel alongside Jackson and Smith but departed after the first season. Cheryl Ladd was subsequently introduced to portray the younger sister of Fawcett’s character, allowing for narrative continuity within the series.
From an astrological perspective, the chart for the series’ release reveals a configuration suggestive of its cultural impact. The Sun (0 Libra) and Mercury (28 Virgo) both form a trine (120 degrees) to Jupiter (1° Gemini), indicating widespread appeal, communicative reach, and popularity. Notably, transiting Uranus at 5 Scorpio formed a conjunction with the natal Suns of both Jaclyn Smith (2 Scorpio) and Kate Jackson (6 Scorpio)
As Jaclyn Smith later reflected, the series was “different, special, and unique,” emphasizing that it portrayed “three women chasing danger instead of being rescued from danger,” thereby granting women “permission to be independent and to break out of the mold and not be defined by men.” (1) This statement encapsulates the Uranian symbolism of breaking conventions and redefining roles because Uranus is associated with innovation, disruption, and liberation; in the Sign of Scorpio—linked to danger, intensity, and transformation—resonates strongly with the show’s premise.
A contrasting dynamic appears in the case of Farrah Fawcett. At the time of the series’ development and early success, transiting Saturn (13 Leo) formed an opposition (180 degrees) to her natal Sun (13 Aquarius). Saturn, representing limitation and constraint, opposing the Sun—symbol of identity, brightness, and vitality—may be interpreted as indicative of creative restriction. Fawcett ultimately left the series in 1979, citing a desire to pursue more challenging and diverse roles beyond what she experienced as a limiting framework. (2)
Cheryl Ladd’s integration into the series reflects a different astrological pattern. According to Ladd, she initially declined producer Aaron Spelling’s offer three times before accepting the role. Her hesitation was rooted in the challenge of succeeding a widely beloved figure. However, the narrative solution—casting her as the sister—allowed her to enter the series as part of an existing symbolic and emotional framework, facilitating audience acceptance. (1) In this case, the Sun (0 Libra) and Mercury (28 Virgo) of the release chart formed a conjunction with Ladd’s natal Saturn (27 Virgo). Saturn is traditionally associated with work, structure, and professional development, while Mercury relates to communication and, symbolically, to sibling relationships. This configuration aligns with Ladd’s role as the younger sister of Fawcett’s character, as well as with the consolidation of her career through the series.
In sum, the differing transits to the actresses’ natal charts highlight the central role of the Sun—whether natal or transiting—in forming significant aspects with their planetary configurations, thereby reflecting their distinct experiences and participation in the series.
