Vozinha, Cape Verde, and Sirius

June 22, 2026

By Ana Andrade

On 14 June, during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Cape Verde faced Spain in a remarkable match that ended in a 0–0 draw. Spain, a former World Cup champion, was unable to score thanks to the outstanding performance of Cape Verdean goalkeeper Josimar Dias, better known as Vozinha. (1)

Vozinha, 40, was named Player of the Match after making seven crucial saves against one of the tournament’s strongest teams. At the final whistle, he was overcome with emotion and left the field in tears. For Cape Verde, the result felt like a victory. Yet one important person was absent from this historic moment: his mother, who was unable to travel to the United States because she could not afford the visa costs. Vozinha described the match as the moment he had been working toward his entire life and said he wished he could have shared it with his mother as well as his late grandparents. (2)

The match was historic for Cape Verde. It marked the nation’s first-ever appearance in a FIFA World Cup and its first World Cup match ended with a draw against a globally renowned football power such as Spain. Remaining unbeaten in their debut game represented a tremendous achievement for a country of fewer than 500,000 inhabitants. (3)

Almost immediately after the match, Vozinha became an international sensation. Within hours, his heroic performance captured the attention of football fans worldwide, and his Instagram account gained approximately 14.8 million followers. (1)

Cape Verde, the homeland of Vozinha, celebrated its Independence Day on 5 July 1975. Officially known as the Republic of Cabo Verde, it is an archipelagic nation located in the central Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa. The country consists of ten volcanic islands with a combined land area of approximately 4,033 square kilometres (1,557 square miles). (3)

There is another intriguing detail connected with the 2026 FIFA World Cup: the use of “Sirius,” the famous instrumental composition by the British rock band The Alan Parsons Project. Originally recorded for the 1982 album Eye in the Sky, “Sirius” serves as the opening track and seamlessly transitions into “Eye in the Sky.” Since 1984, it has been famously used as the introduction music for the Chicago Bulls, and in 2026 it was adopted as the opening music played before every FIFA World Cup match. (4)

In this context, “Sirius” becomes a symbolic reminder of the Fixed Star of the same name. According to traditional astrological sources, Sirius is of the nature of Jupiter, associated with fortune and success, and Mars, associated with competition, courage, and athletic achievement. The star is said to bestow honor, renown, wealth, devotion, passion, and a strong sense of guardianship—qualities particularly fitting for a goalkeeper. When favorably placed, Sirius is believed to confer fame, distinction, and recognition. Historically, conjunctions involving Sirius and the Sun have often been noted in the charts of prominent and celebrated individuals. (5)

Astrologically speaking, the 2026 FIFA World Cup began on 11 June with Sirius positioned at approximately 14 Cancer. Due to the star’s extremely slow movement, Sirius remained at essentially the same position on the day of the Cape Verde–Spain match.

Vozinha was born with Venus at 15 Cancer,  close to Sirius at 13 Cancer, meaning that transiting Sirius was activating his natal Venus at the time of the match. Cape Verde’s national chart also contains the Sun at 12 Cancer in conjunction with Sirius at 13 Cancer. This striking synchronicity suggests that Sirius may symbolically play a significant role in this event. The fact that the musical piece “Sirius” was played before every World Cup match creates a powerful symbolic resonance with both Cape Verde’s Sun and Vozinha’s Venus.

From this perspective, Sirius appears as a benefic influence, reflected not only in Vozinha’s extraordinary performance on the field but also in the opportunities that emerged from it. His World Cup debut transformed his life overnight. Within minutes he became known and admired by millions of people around the world, and the publicity generated by his story increased the possibility that he could finally be reunited with his mother in the United States.

In a symbolic sense, Sirius truly became the “Eye in the Sky.”
