Lumumba Vea, Patrice Lumumba, and Sirius
by Ana Andrade
The instrumental “Sirius” by The Alan Parsons Project has become one of the iconic musical themes of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Played before every match, it has continued to resonate through some of the tournament’s most memorable moments. Interestingly, when the piece first entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on 3 July 1982, (1) the Sun was at 11 Cancer, closely conjunct the fixed star Sirius at approximately 13° Cancer.
According to Ptolemy (an ancient Egyptian astrologer), Sirius is of the combined nature of Jupiter and Mars. Traditionally, it bestows honor, renown, wealth, courage, devotion, passion, and faithfulness, while also producing custodians, curators, and guardians. (2) In the context of the 2026 World Cup, the symbolism of the guardian takes on a different meaning—not as the protector of a goal, but as the guardian of the memory of a national leader.
One of the most remarkable stories of the tournament involved a football supporter from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) (3). Michel Kuka Mboladinga (4), better known as Lumumba Vea (“Lumumba Lives”), has become internationally recognized for attending football matches dressed as a living statue honoring Patrice Lumumba (5), the country’s first prime minister. He first gained widespread media attention during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mboladinga was unable to attend DR Congo’s opening match against Portugal because he was placed in quarantine during the 2026 Ebola outbreak. He was later able to attend his country’s match against Colombia in Mexico, although he was denied a U.S. visa and therefore could not witness DR Congo’s final match of the tournament.
His appearance is a tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the Congolese nationalist leader who served as the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from June until September 1960. Following his overthrow, Lumumba was tortured and executed in 1961, and his body was dissolved in acid in an attempt to erase all traces of him. Decades later, in 2002, Belgium formally acknowledged its moral responsibility for his assassination and issued an official apology. (5)
By portraying Lumumba as a living statue, Mboladinga has become the guardian of the memory of one of Africa’s most influential political figures. What role, then, does Sirius play in this remarkable synchronicity?
Astrologically, the national chart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) (3) places Venus at 10 Cancer, in close conjunction with Sirius at 13 Cancer. Although Mboladinga (4) himself has no natal planets in Cancer, Patrice Lumumba (5) was born with the Sun at 9 Cancer and Pluto at 12 Cancer, both closely conjunct Sirius at 13 Cancer. Furthermore, Mboladinga’s Uranus at 5 Scorpio is conjunct Lumumba’s retrograde Saturn at 7 Scorpio, suggesting a symbolic connection between Mboladinga’s individuality (Uranus) and Lumumba’s enduring legacy (Saturn).
Beyond its associations with fame and recognition, Sirius has long been linked to devotion, loyalty, and guardianship. In this context, Mboladinga embodies these qualities by preserving the memory of Patrice Lumumba on one of the world’s greatest sporting stages. As millions around the globe listened to the instrumental Sirius before each match, its symbolism echoed not only through the music but also through the unwavering dedication of a supporter who transformed himself into the living guardian of his nation’s history.
