Iliana Yotova Elected President of Bulgaria
By Ana Andrade
On 1 November 2026, Bulgaria held the second round of its presidential election, in which Iliana Yotova emerged victorious, becoming the country’s first woman elected president. Yotova defeated Andrey Gyurov in the runoff, securing 57.57% of the vote. Her election marks a historic moment for Bulgaria, as she becomes the first woman to serve as head of state. Almost 1.1 million people voted for her. In the first round, held a week earlier, she had received approximately 530,000 votes, meaning that her support almost doubled in the runoff. (1)
Iliana Yotova advocates restoring dialogue with Moscow and opposes sending further military aid to Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia in February 2022. She supports a diplomatic solution to the conflict and the restoration of relations with the Russian authorities—a position that has shaped her political profile in recent years. (2)
From an astrological perspective, Iliana Yotova’s natal chart (3) and Bulgaria’s national chart (4) display several notable connections. Their Mercury placements are almost identical (6 Scorpio in Yotova’s chart and 7 Scorpio in Bulgaria’s chart), suggesting a strong correspondence in their modes of thinking, communication, and the expression of ideas.
There are also significant connections between Venus and Mars in the two charts. Yotova’s Venus (26 Leo) is conjunct Bulgaria’s Mars (23 Leo), while her Mars (26 Virgo) is conjunct Bulgaria’s Venus (21 Virgo). These mutual contacts symbolically connect the themes of Venus and Mars, highlighting the interplay of values, diplomacy, motivation, and leadership. They may also reflect a strong personal identification with the country’s political direction.
On election day, the transiting Sun (8 Scorpio) was conjunct Yotova’s natal Mercury (6 Scorpio). Transiting Mercury (16 Scorpio) was conjunct her natal Neptune (16 Scorpio), while transiting Mars (18 Leo) and Jupiter (24 Leo) activated her natal Mars (23 Leo). These planetary contacts emphasize communication, visibility, ambition, and the drive to take action. The strong activation of her natal chart can be interpreted as symbolically reflecting her emergence as Bulgaria’s new leader.
The transits to Bulgaria’s national chart are equally significant. Transiting Jupiter (24° Leo) was conjunct the country’s natal Venus (26 Leo), while transiting Saturn retrograde (9 Aries) was approaching a conjunction with Bulgaria’s natal Saturn retrograde (6 Aries).
Jupiter, traditionally regarded as the Greater Benefic, in conjunction with Venus may be interpreted as a favorable symbolic indication for a female presidential candidate, particularly in a context involving public support and recognition. At the same time, Saturn’s return is especially relevant in mundane astrology, as Saturn is associated with institutions, government, authority, and the structures of political power. Together, these transits offer an interesting astrological perspective on the election and the arrival of a woman at the highest level of Bulgaria’s political leadership.
