Mercury Station Brings SCOTUS Rulings

June 30, 2026

By Alex Miller

On Background:  The Mercury retrograde station of 29 June 2026 coincided with a spate of important US Supreme Court decisions, several released within hours.  Among the most contentious and impactful, Watson v Republican National Committee, which was an effort by the RNC and the Mississippi Republican Party to overturn Mississippi state law, which allows absentee mail-in ballots to be counted up to five days after the election if postmarked by Election Day.  The underlying intent of the action was to limit participation in elections by restrictive ballot receipt measures, with mail-in voting often preferred by Democrats, and in-person voting largely performed by Republicans.

The original case was reviewed by the US District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi, which rejected their arguments, granted summary judgment in favor of the election officials, and dismissed the case in July 2024.  The ruling was appealed, and worked its way to the SCOTUS, which has now affirmed Mississippi election law by a 5-4 vote, in a decision authored by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, a Trump appointee.

The Lede:  Mercury’s retrograde station occurred at 1:35 PM EDT in Washington DC on 29 June 2026, with Mercury (26 Cancer) conjunct Jupiter (29 Cancer), combining the decision-making process (Mercury) with the judiciary, with Jupiter ruling judges generally and the US Supreme Court in particular.  Stations (1) pack a powerful punch, demanding attention, and symbolizing important crisis moments, turning points, or major changes in direction.  Mercury also rules voting, the essential component of the case, while Jupiter, known as the Greater Benefic, also rules expansion and positive outcomes.  In this case, their union promoted the SCOTUS siding with expanding the electorate (Mercury also) by allowing late-arriving ballots to be counted, and giving a favorable ruling (Jupiter) to the defendants.

In Brief:  A chart cast for the moment of Mercury’s station in Washington DC shows a Midheaven (13 Cancer) exactly conjoined the US natal Sun, underscoring the centrality (Sun) of the case to the life of the nation, with a democracy dependent upon the participation of as many of its citizens as possible.  Concomitant and subsequent rulings, which deal with issues such as birthright citizenship, campaign finance, and transgender participation in school sports, are likely to have far-reaching ramifications as well.  In addition, Mercury had recently (June 23) returned to its natal place in the US chart (24 Cancer), reactivating in real time national issues connected to voting, official documents, ballots, the postal service and the electorate (all Mercury-ruled).

Deep Dive:  Exact with Mercury for the Watson v RNC ruling is asteroid Watsonia (26 Cancer), perfectly exemplifying the case at hand.  A semisquare (45 degrees) to asteroid Post (10 Virgo) identifies the underlying issue of postmarks on mail-in ballots, while a complimentary sesquiquadrate (135 degrees) to Damocles (10 Pisces) suggests the looming threat or peril (Damocles) of voter suppression which the plaintiffs sought to enact.

Asteroid Justitia (17 Scorpio) is also at station, having turned direct June 25th, just as the SCOTUS end-of-term rush to release decisions began, emphasizing all things related to the dispensing of justice.  Justitia is named for the Roman goddess of justice, the root of our word, with “Justice” also the job title of the presiding jurists.  Justitia’s square (90 degrees) to asteroids Washingtonia (19 Leo) and Donn (24 Leo) shows the clash (square) between state and federal (Washingtonia, for DC, seat of the federal government) law, with the Justices (Justitia) deciding 5-4 in favor of state election law, as mandated by the US Constitution, which reserves these powers to the states, and against the wishes of the Trump administration (Donn, for Donald Trump), which always seeks to disenfranchise voters it deems unsympathetic.

The original case was brought against the Harrison County, Mississippi, election commissioners and other state officials, and the ruling in their favor was authored by Justice Amy Coney Barrett.  This is reflected in asteroid Barrett (28 Sagittarius) opposing (180 degrees) asteroid Harrison (24 Gemini), with asteroid Amy (5 Sagittarius) conjoined asteroid Themis (4 Sagittarius), named for the Greek goddess of justice, reflecting her key role in writing the decision.

Amy/Themis also conjoins asteroid Roberts (8 Sagittarius), for Chief Justice John Roberts, with Barrett and Roberts joining the three liberal Justices on the Court, and forms a T-Square (2) with an opposition to Mars (0 Gemini) with Uranus (3 Gemini) and asteroid America (3 Virgo) on the fulcrum.  This suggests the controversy (Uranus) and angry blowback (Mars) likely to ensue for the conservative defectors (Amy, Roberts), as Trump and his supporters may view them, more concerned with championing (Mars) the right thing (Justitia) for the US (America), over adherence to partisan politics.

Notes:  (1) Stations are periods when, from our perspective on Earth, a planet appears to slow its movement, come to a standstill, and reverse course.  This is an optical illusion created by the triangulation between the sun, Earth, and any third celestial body; astrologically, it represents a focusing of the energies associated with that point, and often coincides with major life events or a radical recalibration of how that point has functioned previously.

(2) A T-Square is a dynamic pattern composed of two or more planets in opposition (180 degrees), each squared (90 degrees) a third.  It represents stress and conflict, with the fulcrum point (at the square) offering a possibility of resolution.
