Jesse Jackson, Dead at 84

The Lede:  The Reverend Jesse Jackson, American civil rights leader, politician, and ordained Baptist minister, passed away peacefully at home on 17 February 2026, surrounded by family and friends, after a long illness.  Jackson, a protégé of Martin Luther King Jr, twice ran for US President, and in 1988 came in second in the Democratic Party’s nominating process, paving the way for Barack Obama’s successful candidacy two decades later.

The date of his death coincides with a Solar Eclipse (28 Aquarius) which tightly squared (90 degrees, stress and challenge) natal (1) Saturn (27 Taurus), the ancient lord of death.  Eclipses provide a powerful punch of energy, and often stimulate major life changes, including death, for those strongly connected to them.  Natal Saturn had been further energized by the station (2) of transit Uranus, conferring shocks and surprises, which exactly conjoined it less than two weeks prior, on February 4^th. 

In Brief:  The Saturn/Neptune conjunction (both 0 Aries) on the World Axis Point heralded the passing (Saturn) of a globally recognized (World Axis) religious/spiritual (Neptune) leader (Aries), with their precise conjunction coming just three days later.  The pair is exactly sesquiquadrate (135 degrees, focusing, stressful) Jackson’s natal Midheaven (15 Scorpio), governing career, status and reputation.  The Midheaven (or MC), the point of highest elevation in the chart, is also known as the focus of all eyes, with Jackson’s death qualifying as attention-getting.  Transit Mercury (16 Pisces) is trine (120 degrees, supportive, ease) this point, and sesquiquadrate Jackson’s natal Pluto (5 Leo), modern lord of death, bringing news (Mercury) of his death (Pluto).

Deep Dive:  The eclipsed Sun (28 Aquarius) closely conjoins asteroid Jackson (29 Aquarius), placing the civil rights leader in the spotlight one final time; also conjunct asteroid Rip (23 Aquarius), symbolizing the acronym “RIP” (Rest In Peace), referring to a passing.  The trio conjoins Jackson’s natal asteroid Requiem (23 Aquarius), named for the funeral mass for the dead, and sets off a Grand Cross (3), opposed natal asteroid Rip (27 Leo) and squared the natal Moon (23 Taurus), governing his overall health, with Saturn (27 Taurus), representing endings and death; also squared natal Venus (27 Scorpio), perhaps symbolizing the peacefulness of his passing, surrounded by loved ones (both Venus).

Asteroid Jessie (26 Gemini), an alternate spelling, came to its station four days prior to Jesse Jackson’s passing, indicating a major shift of direction, a pivotal crossroads or turning point, had been reached.  Also at station, asteroid Requiem (19 Libra), turning retrograde on February 10^th, conjoined Jackson’s natal Sun (15 Libra).
