US Midterm Election Preview

October 21, 2026

By Alex Miller

The US Midterm Elections, to be held 3 November 2026, will be among the most consequential of the modern era.  Heretofore, a supine Republican-controlled Congress has allowed Donald Trump to ride roughshod over norms and laws during his second term, offering no resistance and threatening no accountability.  Unchecked, Trump has pushed the limits of executive power, levying tariffs and starting foreign wars at whim, and with impunity.

But these choices have had direct repercussions on the American economy, with rising inflation and increased costs for everything from gas to groceries, housing and health insurance.  In addition, irresponsible tax cuts have added to the bank accounts of Trump’s fellow billionaires, but also resulted in diminished services and government support for low-income families in need, and led to the closure of rural medical facilities.

As well, obvious corruption and self-dealing from Donald Trump, his sons, Cabinet secretaries and their families, have become increasingly impossible for the American electorate to ignore or condone.  The result is a growing backlash across the nation, in favor of Democrats, as the Party best positioned to place curbs on a runaway presidency, provide oversight, and enact accountability.  But to be clear, Democrats are not held in high esteem either, and the imminent political power shift, should it occur, will constitute less of a “Blue Wave” than a “Red Undertow,” as more and more GOP candidates face defeat based in part on their allegiance to an increasingly toxic president.

Given the angry, retributive mood of the electorate, as well as the weight of history, where midterm elections often favor the Party out of power, it has been assumed all year that control of the US House of Representatives will pass to the Democrats, but, until recently, the Senate was still deemed to be safely in Republican hands.  However, current polling suggests that the GOP’s grasp on Senate power may be slipping away; let’s see what astrology has to say about the matter.

The Sun (11 Scorpio) on 3 November 2026 conjoins a retrograde Mercury (13 Scorpio), a sure sign of election difficulties, with Mercury ruling the vote itself, as well as its tabulation and certification.  A retrograde Mercury can cause complications and confusion with such things as polling locations, voter registrations, breakdown of voting machines, false or misleading political ads, and internal communications among election officials.

In addition, the situation is exacerbated by Mars (19 Leo) in square (90 degrees) to Sun/Mercury, flaring tempers and increasing the likelihood of political violence.  The period could feel tense in the extreme, a tinderbox waiting to explode.  Trump has often threatened to deploy the National Guard, ICE officers, and even the US military, all Mars-ruled, to polling places, ostensibly to “ensure” the integrity of the vote, but in reality, to intimidate voters of color and reduce turnout among that demographic.  Mars active in this manner on Election Day transforms this hypothetical into something more probable.

As well, a second square, to Pluto (3 Aquarius), suggests a heightened level of criminality or corruption tied to the election.  This may be merely reflective of the government corruption which has lately risen to the top of mind for voters in recent polling, and the increasingly obvious lawlessness of the administration, emerging as prime issues in this election.  But it could also point to illegal or criminal acts performed during, or in the aftermath of, the election itself.

Asteroids fill in the gaps in our knowledge.  A conjunction of asteroid House (7 Scorpio) with the Sun and Mercury images the vital importance of the outcome in the House of Representatives, where the subpoena power of a new Democrat majority would enable true oversight and investigation into administration corruption and malfeasance.

A T-Square (1) from Sun/Mercury to asteroid Victoria (20 Leo), named for the Roman goddess of victory, and asteroid Demokritos (13 Aquarius), a marker for the Democratic Party, portends a decisive win (Victoria) for Democrats.  The extent of that victory may be shocking in the extreme, given an opposition (180 degrees) from Uranus (4 Gemini) to asteroids Nike and Karma (both 9 Sagittarius), with Uranus ruling shocks and surprises as well as revolutions, Nike named for the Greek goddess of victory, and Karma encapsulating the principle of “reaping what you sow,” as the GOP is punished for its slavish fealty to Donald Trump, now at record low approval rates.  The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has been blue-shifting this election for months, moving the outcome toward Democrats, to the extent that Senate races even in such diehard ruby-red states as Kansas and South Carolina, are now in play.

Speaking of the Senate, asteroid Senator (20 Libra) conjoined Venus (25 Libra) indicates the massive amounts of cash (Venus) being injected into these races across the country, with an estimated $2.5 billion to be spent on political ads alone, plus the concomitant campaign staffing, printed materials, Get Out the Vote efforts, and other associated costs.  Venus/Senator also favors female Senate candidates, with more than 60 running for nominations in major political parties in 2026 (up 30% from 2024), and 19 achieving nominee status (10 Ds and 9 Rs).

This pairing also reflects the Senate as the main battlefield of voter discontent in this election, with an opposition to dwarf planet Eris (25 Aries), named for the Greek goddess of strife and discord.  Venus opposed Eris suggests women as particularly upset over the status quo.  Eris also resonates to disaffected, “othered” populations who feel disrespected and marginalized, and are seeking redress of wrongs.  A T-Square is formed with a union of asteroids Nemesis (21 Capricorn) and Whitehouse (26 Capricorn), suggesting Donald Trump’s (Whitehouse, a symbol of the US presidency) current status as Republican Senate candidates’ worst enemy (Nemesis), a proximate cause of their ruin and downfall (also Nemesis).  A trine (120 degrees) from Whitehouse to asteroid Lie (23 Taurus) confirms the ease (trine) with which Trump (Whitehouse) will spread falsehoods (Lie) about a loss.

Senate candidates are also very strongly tapped into the energy of the day, with 12 out of 18 candidates in 9 close races having connections from asteroids representing them, to the Sun on Election Day.  Solar connection doesn’t necessarily indicate victory, but it does elevate the candidate into the spotlight, improving visibility.

Of course, elections in the US are no longer restricted to a single day, with many states offering early voting and mail-in ballots, extending the overall electoral season by as much as six weeks, but November 3rd is the official day of reckoning.  Given the skies, it looks to be a particularly good day for Democrats, and democracy.

Notes:  (1) A T-Square is a dynamic pattern composed of two or more planets in opposition (180 degrees), each squared (90 degrees) a third.  It represents stress and conflict, with the fulcrum point (at the square) offering a possibility of resolution.
