Lunar Eclipse Fallout: Nepal & Norway
By Alex Miller
The August 28th Lunar Eclipse will hold sway for roughly six months, until the subsequent eclipse occurs, but its effects will reverberate for years. Two nation states touched by its power were Nepal, where a collapsed glacial lake created a torrential flood two days prior to the lunation, causing massive destruction and loss of life; and Norway, whose beloved king of thirty-five years passed away on the very day of the eclipse itself.
The August 26th flooding in the border region between Nepal and Tibet was caused when a portion of bedrock in the upper Himalayas collapsed, taking part of a glacier with it, releasing the waters of a glacial lake that had been held in check. The resulting torrent, up to 50 meters (160 feet) in height, swept downslope with no warning, raising river levels by some 9 meters (30 feet), and obliterating everything in its path, leaving a trail of mud and debris up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) thick. As of this writing, more than 800 are dead, and over 3000 still missing.
The pre-eclipse celestial topography supported devastating destruction of this type, with a conjunction of the Sun (3 Virgo) resting at the Apex of a Yod pattern (1), AKA a “Finger of Destiny,” with exact inconjunct aspects (150 degrees) to Pluto (3 Aquarius) and Neptune (3 Aries). Pluto represents death and destruction, Neptune rules water and flooding, and the Sun brings global focus and attention, accompanied here by Mercury (2 Virgo), heralding a newsworthy event.
In addition, the Sun and the upcoming eclipse degree (4 Pisces) are squared (90 degrees) by Uranus (5 Gemini), suggesting the uncontrolled release of violent energy, with a shocking and unexpected outcome, as well as the huge levels of disruption, with an estimated 90,000 whose lives have been impacted by the event. Uranus also alludes to the many “strangers” caught up in the tragedy (including 95 Americans), with the area a common destination for tourists making pilgrimages to local sites, seeking spiritual connection via meditation.
Nepal’s natal (2) chart shows the fatal connections to the eclipse degree which prompted the disaster, with its Sun (7 Gemini) caught in the crosshairs of the Lunar Eclipse, forming a T-Square (3), and its Saturn (2 Virgo), ancient lord of death, also symbolizing loss, hardship and deprivation, conjoined by the transit Sun.
Major changes in the offing for Nepal can be seen in the station (4) of asteroid Kathmandu (19 Capricorn), named for the country’s capital, and therefore its current celestial representative. Kathmandu rests at the Apex of another “predestined” pattern, termed a Thor’s Hammer, with sesquiquadrate aspects (135 degrees) to both the Sun and Uranus, which are squared each other. Another indicator of massive devastation is the ongoing square from Pluto to dwarf planet Haumea (2 Scorpio), a supercharged entity whose keywords include “sweeping change.” The impetus for this particular change in Nepal is clearly seen in the exact conjunction of asteroid Flood with Haumea.
King Harald V of Norway (5) passed away in an Oslo hospital within hours of the Lunar Eclipse, at 6:35 AM CEST on August 28th, at the age of 89, from complications related to hemolytic anemia, a condition involving the rapid destruction of red blood cells. Harald had ascended the throne in 1991, and was a transformative, beloved figure to his people, the first heir-apparent of a Scandinavian monarchy to marry for love, outside the royal circle, choosing commoner Sonja Haraldsen, daughter of a clothing merchant, whom he dated for nine years before their marriage.
In addition to their groundbreaking 1968 union, Harald oversaw additional important modernizations of the monarchy, abolishing centuries of custom by allowing females into the line of succession in 1971, and introducing absolute primogeniture (eldest child is heir, regardless of gender) in 1990, 25 years before the UK followed suit. A world-class sailor, Harald participated in the 1964, 1968, and 1972 Olympics, reminiscent of his third cousin, Princess Anne of Great Britian, an equestrian competitor in 1976. Harald’s leadership during Norwegian national crises, such as the New Year’s Day Storm in 1992, the July 2011 Anders Brevik massacre, the 2020 Gjerdrum landslide, and particularly the COVID-19 pandemic (January 2020 to March 2022), were met with both national and international acclaim.
At his death, the Sun (4 Virgo) and Mercury (5 Virgo) were rising on the Ascendant (7 Virgo), squared Uranus (5 Gemini) and opposed the Moon (5 Pisces); a semisquare (45 degree) to Venus (20 Libra) from the Sun depicts the “beloved” nature of his subjects’ affections, known as “the grandfather of the nation.” On the evening of his death, when Harald’s coffin was taken from the National Hospital to the Royal Palace, an estimated 10,000 people lined the streets of Oslo with flowers, Norwegian flags and cards.
Harald’s natal Sun (2 Pisces) and Midheaven (5 Pisces) were both conjoined by the Lunar Eclipse, which was also sesquiquadrate his Moon (15 Cancer), which thus affected his vitality (Sun), general health (Moon) and status or place in the world (Midheaven). The Solar Eclipse (20 Leo) of August 12th squared natal Mars (22 Scorpio), ruling the blood diseases and disorders from which he expired, a signal his chronic condition was about to become fatal.
Norway itself (6) was also under the gun of the Lunar Eclipse, opposed its Ascendant (8 Virgo), prefiguring the major shift in its public image (Ascendant), losing its head of state, who had humbly and honorably represented his country on the world stage for 35 years.
King Harald V’s death is further imaged celestially by asteroid Harald (2 Aquarius), conjoined Pluto (3 Aquarius), modern lord of death, and asteroids King (24 Capricorn) and Atropos (2 Aquarius), named for the mythic Greek Fate who severs the thread of life at death.
Notes: (1) A Yod is composed of two points at is base, sextile (60 degrees) from each other, each inconjunct (150 degrees) a third point on the Apex. Also termed a Finger of Destiny, Finger of God, or Finger of Fate, it represents a “fated” situation or circumstance, something the individual is predestined to accomplish, or an issue with karmic implications. This can also indicate a hidden gift or talent, something apparently God-given or innate.
(2) Nepal, Federal Republic declared, 28 May 2008, no time available
(3) A T-Square is a dynamic pattern composed of two or more planets in opposition (180 degrees), each squared (90 degrees) a third. It represents stress and conflict, with the fulcrum point (at the square) offering a possibility of resolution.
(4) Stations are periods when, from our perspective on Earth, a planet appears to slow its movement, come to a standstill, and reverse course. This is an optical illusion created by the triangulation between the sun, Earth, and any third celestial body; astrologically, it represents a focusing of the energies associated with that point, and often coincides with major life events or a radical recalibration of how that point has functioned previously.
(5) Harald V, King of Norway, born 21 February 1937, 12:45 PM MET, Skaugum, Norway (Rodden Rating A)
(6) Norway, independence, 7 June 1905, 11 AM MET, Oslo
